I am looking for a handgun for concealed carry. My main use is for back country against 4 legged predators (cougars and black bear), but I also want it to be useful against the 2 legged variety.
I am getting a lot of opinions from friends, co-workers (Fish&Wildlife LE) and dealers. My LE friends recommend the .45 and .40. The dealers lean toward the 10mm. The Glock models I have looked at all feel fine in my hand, although the 10mm is on the large size for grip. My favorites so far are the model 29-10mm and the model 27-.40 caliber I am looking for advice on caliber for dangerous wildlife. I really like the 10mm due to the hotter charge, but wonder about how available the ammunition is.
I am also considering the S&W .357 model 60 with the 3' barrel.
Please don't suggest a 44 magnum or the .454 Casull. They are just too large for my needs.
Thanks for any thoughts.

I think a 45 or 40 (I know 9mm would) just piss off a bear.. per your request, I won't suggest 44mag I'd blow off the 357 the 10mm is probably your choice then... it's available just expensive.

I am considering a .44, but the ones that are small enough for my use won't fully utilize the .44 cartridge. The alloy ones hurt!
Why blow off the .357?

When I went into grizzly country; I was told my 357 would piss off the bear by the ranger. he stopped short of saying a 44mag would do beter.
ask pistol bear hunters wha they use.

I said in the original post that I was concerned about black bear, not grizzly. If I do go into grizzly country. I would take something much bigger (.454 Casull, 12 gauge or rifle). I doubt the 10mm would be much good either.

The most painful gun I have ever shot was a 44 mag mountain gun. Very compact and light but with a full load it just hurt.I carry my DE 50 in a shoulder holster if I am out in dangerous areas.

'hurt'? it's a survival tool; not a plinker or target pistol...
You're only going to shoot it if your life is in danger, and the 'pain' would be worth it

That was my line of thinking too. But since this will be my only handgun for a while, something a little more fun to practice with is in order. The next one though...
