What do y'all think about the S&W Model 637? I'm going to have a few extra bucks here in a few months, and want to get something I can carry if need be, at least in the glove box of my car, after I get a concealed weapons permit.

It's an 'airweight' .38, fairly small, I think it said 6.5' at the longest? Something like 15 ounces, unloaded. It holds five rounds, has like a two inch barrel.

Size is of paramount concern, but I need to be able to get my (medium size) hands around the darned thing - I wouldn't mind buying a replacement grip for it.

I really like Dad's Colt .38 Detective's Special, but they certainly aren't giving those away at $525 at the gun show.

Any thoughts on the weapon? Any suggestions for a different one? Price is certainly important. My only requirements are that the thing pack a little more punch than a .22 and be small enough to carry concealed if I had to.

I would recommend a Ruger SP-101 in .357 Magnum (which, of course, can also fire .38 Special). It's heavier than an 'airweight' of course; extra weight will naturally absorb recoil. If you're not planning on carrying frequently, you may the extra weight acceptable. The Ruger is also somewhat more affordable.

My only real objection with S&W is the deal they made with the Clinton administration. If you really want a S&W and don't mind a bit more weight, you may want to consider the stainless version of their 'Chief's Special.' It can handle .38 Special +P ammunition, if memory serves.
