What is the maximum range a 12 ga shotgun will be fatal to a human (using an average target load)?

From my Marine days, up to 50 yards and that's pushing it.

I kind of agree with the 50 yards as an effective range but there are so many variables, shot size, angle of firing, velocity of load and others that could result in one 'Magic Pellet'. I would always figure a couple of hundred yards and make sure of your backstop beyond that ( I am assuming you are interested in safely busting some clay birds rather than a self defense load of buckshot or slug??)

What is an average target load ? This can be some low powered # 8 shot or you can use 00 buckshot. The bird shot fired up at an angle will not fall back with very much velocity. The buckshot will.

never tried a shotgun on a human, but have killed several whitetail deer at 60 to 70 yards.
