I disagree with the analysis of gun phobias though (in which they say its not a phobia because they won't admit to being irrational). Gun phobia is reinforced by a large chunk of society, even by politicians in the highest ranks. Forcing their phobia on the rest of us is presented as a crusade against crime. It is very easy for one of these people to mentally ignore the logic that tells them it is silly. Compare this to an irrational fear of doorknobs, in which case it would be hard to deny that it is silly not to be able to walk through a door and they won't have others twisting their malady into some kind of moral quest.
Thus, we may lack evidence of a phobia in the strictest sense, but in this case that particular piece of evidence might not be expected. A short analysis of the issue in question tells you that these people would recognize their irrational fear if they could just push their own reasoning on top of the angry campaigning they have been exposed to.
