A man who's brand new to the shooting sports might not understand that the one-word reply 'Savage' is a recommendation that the Savage brand of rifles is a very good choice for a man who is on a tight budget but who nevertheless would like to have a very good rifle for the money. Mac Man, you can take a look at the Savage brand of firearms at their website http://www.savagearms.com/ They really do have some great rifles at very reasonable prices. You might also check your local area for any gun clubs or outdoorsman's clubs; one afternoon spent talking with the club members would probably help you quite a bit.

Would you have understood better if I had said, Savage, a bolt action rifle that fits a tight budget like he ask? You think he was out trying to buy Gingus Khan? Oh, that's right, Gingus didn't have a bolt action and he might not fit a tight budget but at the very least he was a 'savage'. Hummm, there is no capital letter on that savage. Make a note to self, 'I must try harder for Dana'. so he can understand someone else's question

The point I was making is that Mac Man, who describes himself as being 'new at this', might not be familiar with Savage as a brand of firearms and therefore might not have understood the one-word reply. I was simply trying to be helpful to a man who is brand new to the shooting sports. I apologize if my posting made you feel that I was criticizing you; that wasn't my intention.

Go to your local Walmart and check out Savage, Remington 700 ADL synthetic and the Weatherby Vanguard. Any of these would be an excellent choice.

Sorry, didn't mean to let this get that far out of hand. This group needs good readers like yourself and I shouldn't have been so prickly.

It was a simple question and I gave a simple answer. If it's intended use or a question about where it could be obtained would have been ask I would have elaborated. It was only a guess on my part that he would know how to shop for the recommended brand of gun. Way to much time spent in court makes me less likely to give more information than ask for.

Thanks for your patience. People tell me I use ten words where one will do, and I'm afraid they're right. Good point about 'time spent in court'; we could all stand to be a little more cautious in what we say, certainly including me.

Speaking of Savage, did anybody see that article in Handloader magazine about the new Savage Model 40 Varmint Hunter? Looks like a very interesting single-shot. I'm starting to think I may be forced to buy one next spring and get it rechambered in .22 K-Hornet. I notice they also offer it in the new .204 Ruger; at a base price of only $374 I bet they sell a whole bunch of guns. Mac Man, please note that this is a bolt action like you say you're thinking of, and it looks gorgeous too. You could do worse than to give this one a try.

I have 2 Hornets that I would sell for around that price. I shoot a .17 Ackley and the .22's just gather dust.

I didn't reply to him, because I was inclined to ask him why he wanted one. If a plinker or squirrel gun I would have suggested a .22 cal like the Henry Repeater, or if he wanted a deer gun a different reply. If skeet I would have suggested a shotgun. But when I read your reply, I was wondering how you knew what he needed. This too is not a criticism but a serious question. I didn't know how to answer his question with a single word.

My first guns were bad choices. They were used guns that were not well suited to my purposes. I am learning and do a lot of reading on the subject. But I too was confused by your original reply.
