Considering their credibility I'm not surprised the USPTO is giving away patents to every merkin nutcase claiming he/she has invented things already invented in other countries decades/centuries ago.

FYI, the airplane, helicopter and parachute was invented by Leonardo Da Vinci about 500 years ago. Replicas built from his drawings are flying today.

While I have the utmost admiration for Da Vinci and his works, it bears stating these 'inventions' were only sketches, line drawings on a bit of paper. He also 'invented' the tank (as a war machine) and the machine gun (sketches and textual representations of these exist as well). However, like the airplane, the helicopter, and the parachute, a few years were required before these devices could be actually constructed and used.
